The Tampa Bay Storm (7-3, 2-1) extended their season-high winning streak to five games on Saturday with a 65-40 win over the Utah Blaze (1-9, 0-6). The victory marked Tampa Bay’s fourth consecutive win on the road, while also prolonging its opponent’s losing streak to six games.
Tampa Bay’s defense forced five turnovers in the contest, its highest single-game total of the season, including three that were converted into scores. Brandon Hefflin intercepted a pass late in the game to seal the win, while Kelvin Kinney, Erick McIntosh and Michael Hawthorne each created turnovers as well on the night. The Storm’s defensive effort also resulted in allowing the fewest number of opposing points to date this season.
Quarterback Brett Dietz earned AFL Player of the Game honors, completing 23 of 37 passes, throwing for 323 yards, and helping his team post 65 points, good for a season-high total. Dietz’s nine touchdown passes also came just short of tying his career-high single-game touchdown record of 10 set in 2008. His primary target, Hank Edwards, led all receivers on the night, pulling in a career single game-high14 catches and 195 yardsm while tying a career-high five scores. Teammate Tyrone Timmons collected nine receptions good for 117 yards and three touchdowns as well for Tampa Bay, while Utah’s Aaron Boone amassed 10 receptions totaling 106 yards and a pair of scores.
Tampa Bay came out from the opening kickoff much like it did a week ago in the team’s 61-55 win at Alabama with a relentless offense complimented by an opportune defense. The Storm scored three times in the stanza, with each of Dietz’s touchdown passes finding different receivers. On the game’s very first play, Dietz set the tone by launching a 36-yard score to Edwards to give the visitors an early 7-0 lead. Timmons doubled the lead before Utah’s Damian Walker trotted in for six to cut the deficit to eight points following a missed extra point.
Midway through the quarter, Hawthorne racked up his second interception in as many games as he picked off a pass from Utah signal caller Brett Elliott, which was converted into an additional six points on the ensuing possession after Dietz hit wideout DeAndrew Rubin on a corner route to make the score 21-6. Tampa Bay nearly capitalized by forcing a second turnover late in the period after Cliff Dukes blocked Ben Scott’s field goal, but the ball was stripped after Hefflin gained control, allowing Utah to maintain possession as the second quarter opened.
The Blaze climbed right back into the contest in the second frame, matching their opponent’s touchdown total from the first quarter to bring a 15-point disadvantage to within one in the half’s final minute. Elliott found Boone in the paint to spark the rally before finding the receiver a second time on the team’s next offensive series. Edwards put the Storm out to a 28-13 lead when he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Dietz, but the Storm passer was picked off by Patrick Body on Tampa Bay’s next drive leading to an opposing score made possible by the Blaze’s Chris Francies. Edwards reeled in his third touchdown reception of the night with eight seconds left to cap the first half scoring, while also providing the Storm with a 35-27 lead at the intermission.
A myriad of penalties overshadowed the game’s scoring following the half, as Tampa Bay was cited for 109 penalty yards in the third quarter after amassing just 35 in the first half alone. The infractions however, which included a number of unsportsmanlike conduct calls, did not halt Tampa Bay’s effort to maintain the lead. Hawthorne came up big a second time as he forced a fumble, which he later recovered to give the offense a chance to increase the lead. Dietz did not disappoint, as he lofted a pass into the redzone, which Edwards hauled in before sprinting nine yards into the paint. Utah countered with a score from Elliott to the fullback Chris Solomona, but Kelvin Kinney returned a blocked extra point attempt downfield into the endzone to give the Storm an additional two points on the scoreboard. Both clubs then traded a pair of touchdowns, with Dietz finding Timmons for six and Elliott responding with a touchdown pass to Akamu Aki. The score would be Elliott’s last, finishing the game with 179 yards and five touchdowns.
Despite the Storm finding the endzone twice more to cap the game’s scoring in the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay’s defense sealed the win with a number of spectacular plays to close out the Blaze. Following Timmons’ touchdown reception, Erick McIntosh intercepted Elliott’s pass that led to the contest’s final score, a 25-yard completion from Dietz to Edwards. The defense took over from there, as Kinney forced and recovered a fumble before Hefflin finished things off with an interception to close the game.
