Recap

The Tampa Bay Storm entered the 2015 season looking to return to the playoffs after finishing 8-10 and missing out the previous year.

The Storm returned nine players from 2014 and added a mix of rookies and arena veterans, including new starting quarterback Jason Boltus, in the offseason.

Facing the defending American Conference and East Division champion Cleveland Gladiators in the season opener, though, a handful of costly mistakes plagued the Storm during a 60-44 loss in front of 9,727 at Amalie Arena.

“When you’re playing a team that went to the ArenaBowl, you have to execute,” Storm head coach Lawrence Samuels said. “I can’t be down on them because the effort was there at times. We had our chances, we just turned the ball over. Turnovers killed us.”

Storm Insider - Post Game vs. Cleveland

Five Things

  1. Storm head coach Lawrence Samuels has ties to the Gladiators, as he played for the franchise in 2002 when the team was located in New Jersey.
  2. DB Alfred Phillips will be playing in his seventh match against Cleveland. He’s had quite a bit of success against the Gladiators, as last time out against this team he recorded seven tackles, two interceptions, and two pass breakups.
  3. The Storm has two live streaks heading into the 2015 season: seven consecutive games with a sack and 11 consecutive games with a tackle for a loss.
  4. Veteran receiver T.T. Toliver needs just two receiving touchdowns for his 56th in a Storm uniform, which would rank him 7th in team history.
  5. This game will be a rematch of Tampa Bay’s 2014 season finale, as the Storm were stopped from clinching a playoff spot after a 56-49 loss to the Gladiators at Amalie Arena.

Last Time Out

The Tampa Bay Storm controlled their own destiny in the 2014 AFL playoff picture, but were unable to overcome a surging Cleveland offense as they fell to the Gladiators 55-49 in front of a league-wide high attendance of 14,770 fans at Amalie Motor Oil Field.

With the Philadelphia Soul losing their content earlier that evening to the Pittsburgh Power, the Storm needed a win to secure the final playoff spot in the AFL. However, Tampa Bay came up short.
