Tampa Bay’s Prechae Rodriguez caught a one-yard touchdown pass as time expired and the Storm (2-1) defeated the Jacksonville Sharks (1-2), 71-69, Friday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
Bernard Morris had connected with Terrance Smith for 42-yard touchdown with 4.5 seconds left to give Jacksonville a 69-65 lead. However, after the ensuing kickoff, the Sharks were called for pass interference on a Storm quarterback Stephen Wasil hail mary attempt. The penalty gave the Storm the ball on the one-yard line. One untimed down play found Rodriguez collecting his fifth touchdown of the game from Wasil.
Wasil was 29-of-38 for 312 yards and seven touchdowns. Rodriguez had 11 catches for 101 yards and Chandler Williams added a game-high 14 receptions for 169 yards and two scores.
The teams exchanged the lead four times in the final 40 seconds of the game. Sharks' backup quarterback Bernard Morris ran in from five yards out at 40.7 seconds to give the Sharks a 62-58. Storm receiver Victor Williams returned an on-side kickoff 11 yards with 37.6 seconds putting the Storm back on top 65-62 lead.
The Storm took a 51-41 lead on Juan Bongarra’s 18-yard field goal with 11:29 remaining in the fourth period, but Jacksonville rallied for a pair of scores. A Storm turnover allowed Rendrick Taylor to run his second touchdown of the game from two-yards out. This gave the Sharks a 55-51 lead with 5:12 left in the game.
What started out as a scoring barrage with the Storm leading 21-20 after one period, slowed a bit in the second stanza. The Sharks took a 34-27 lead after Jacobs connected with Smith and Jeron Harvey with 2:24 remaining in the second quarter.
The Storm cameback on an 8-play, 45-yard drive at the end of the second quarter as Wasil hit Rodriguez his third score of the night. Juan Bongarra’s extra point tied the game at 34 as the teams entered the half.
Two electrifying kickoffs of 58 and 57 yards in a two-minute period of the first quarter by Sharks' Terrance Smith helped Jacksonville take an early lead, 14-13, at the end of the first quarter.
